The season was kicked off by Jon Ward over in Alicante in May competing at the European Masters competition...up to his old tricks Jon secured another medal to add to his ever growing haul...Bronze in the Surf Race! With Devon competitions being held early due to a busy season both Nippers & Youth/Seniors retained their county titles with strong performances both on the beach and in the sea Next up was the first Celtic Cup round of the summer, taking place on Croyde beach many Woolacombe youth & senior members helped make up a strong Devon team taking on Cornwall With a back up date needed Devon Masters went ahead at the end of July, with new found drive and swelling numbers the Wooly team secured 2nd place in tough conditions The next whistles to be blown were not for competition but for what Woolacombe SLSC do best....for training and developing new skills in young people. On Tuesday 8th Aug a Sea Cadet course was held for members of the public aged 8-13. Action packed with fun and learning new lifesaving skills the day was a huge success with lots of positive feedback Saturday 12th Aug saw the start of Nationals week, Woolacombe Masters are now the team to watch with returning experience and new members creating an awesome mix. After 2 days of competition 3rd place overall and many personal bests & medals were secured...2018 promises great things! After a rest day it was time for Youth to hit the beach, returning to a beach with waves was heaven to the competitors and after 2 great days racing an overall 3rd place was achieved and massively deserved for a relatively small team....One member even made the news Moving on to the last 2 days of racing for the week, Nippers arguably didn't get the chance to show all their strengths. with only a few girls surf races run the rest of the competition was kept shore side due to sea conditions....even with this adversity Nippers excelled and came home National Nipper Champions! The last domestic racing of the season was left to Senior members, held at Portreath beach Senior Nationals was racing at its toughest right from the first whistle! Lead by Sean Deasy the team raced hard and fought for every last point in each race. After many heats & finals the team came away with 3rd place overall With the last competition of the year finished and all the points totalled the Club is proud to announce it secured 2nd place in the Super-club standings! The committee would like to say a big well done to all members for training and racing so hard. The skills you learn and practise each week might keep you or someone else safe one day Looking forward to 2018 already!
