BLACK ROCK RUN PRESS RELEASE 2018
The Black Rock Run once again delivered a fabulous evening for runners in Woolacombe last Friday. The Lifeguards dominated the top slots this year, with Oli Wright romping home in 20:09 and Ben Grant a very close second place, with Nick Bailey from Ilfracombe Running club in 3rd. Oli Wright’s RNLI Lifeguard team with Niall Deasy, Matt Bull and Josh Surridge secured first place, with lifeguards and Bideford Bay Surf Life Saving Club coming a close second, and Team Roberts (lifeguards and Woolacombe Surf Life saving members) coming third. A Woolacombe team from Gulf Stream surf factory came in 4th, led by owner Julian Matthews and brother Nicholas. Meanwhile, the ladies winner was Sammy Antell from Bideford AAC, followed closely by Beth Barrington, a previous winner, from llfracombe Running club, and Amy Cassells 3rd. Ilfracombe clinched the ladies team prize, with Beth, Kajal Bailey, Deborah Freeman and Amy Cassells. Second Ladies team prize went to Bideford Stones. With prizes from St Austell Breweries, a lively evening was had by all. Meanwhile, the Mill Rock Run for Under 14’s was won by visting club runner from Sweden, Hannah Kinane. This family visit every year and always come to the Black Rock Run, which is always the first Friday in July. They love making it part of their annual holiday to Woolacombe! Other age group winners (girls) were Isabelle Roome (Woolacombe SLSC) Rosie Creely, Farrah Carter, Beatrice Troth, Marnie Hellmund (Woolacombe SLSC) and Masie Cooper . Boys winners were Jim Turner (Woolacombe SLSC), Seth Hellmund (Woolacombe SLSC) Jamie Kinane, Felix Gregory, Alex Murdoch, Mahi Bailey and Kush Bailey.

The scheduled Devon team trial for Sat 2nd June is now CANCELLED. Please read the communication below from Keith Gammon and take actions if you are interested in representing Devon in the up and coming competitions at Croyde (June 16th) & Branksome Chine (July 7th)
Dear Athletes, Parents and coaches. For a multitude of reasons the selectors have decided to cancel next weeks trial and select the devon team based on last years competitive results. If you would like to be considered for the Devon youth or senior team to compete at the Goldcoast Oceanfest event at Croyde on the 16th June can you please apply via email listing your competitive Surf Life Saving results from last season. Please reply to this email and cc dicktracy@btinternet.com. You must be 15 before the 31st December 2018 to be eligible. Please be reminded All entrants must be paid up members of SLSGB and have the relevant competencies required to compete. Coaches can you please forward this email to all of your athletes as I don’t have everyones email address. What is it all about? This award will give learners the opportunity to demonstrate the relevant knowledge and skills to enable them to demonstrate that they can deliver quality training to candidates for SLSGB qualifications and awards and to then be able to competently assess and verify these qualifications. Individuals are expected to hold or have held the SLSGB awards that they wish to deliver. This course qualifies you as a probationary Trainer Assessor, you will then be expected to complete a probationary period and deliver and assess a course under the supervision of a qualified Mentor. Trainer Assessor Endorsement Course Please Note: You are only eligible to enrol on this course if you are already a qualified Level 2 Coach. This award will give learners the opportunity to update their existing Level 2 Coaching skills to demonstrate that they have the knowledge and skills required to demonstrate that they can deliver quality training to candidates for SLSGB qualifications and awards and to then be able to competently assess and verify these qualifications. This Award will also allow the candidate to deliver the Level 1 Assistant Coach Award at club level supported by the National Education and Training Manager. This course qualifies you as a probationary Trainer Assessor, you will then be expected to complete a probationary period and deliver and assess a course under the supervision of a qualified Mentor. Level 1 Coastal Surveillance Course
Open to any member over the age of 14 years Where: Woolacombe School When: Friday 11th May 2018 (5.30-8.30pm) How Much: £10pp Course Tutor: Mark Turner MIS Course Code: 43480 (enrolment closes on Friday 27th April) Please note your SLSGB membership must be valid for 2018 in order to be able to enrol on this course. What is it all about? This Award will provide the learner with the knowledge and skills required in order to provide reactive preventative action and education within the community. Through training of environmental observation and understanding of human behaviour and observed changes in behaviour. This is the first Level in the National Patrol Framework. Last week during a gala dinner ceremony hosted by the Australian Tourism Industry a WLSLC race cap was presented to current Nutri-Grain and World Ironwomen Champion Harriet Brown!
Attendees were asked to take a gift of thanks for their Australian hosts and a Woolacombe member suggested a club Race Cap! Legendary surf club BMD Northcliffe member Harriet accepted the cap and donated a new Northcliffe cap in return and an open invitation to visit the club for any Woolacombe member! Save the date
